It’s about 2 p.m. and you still have a laundry list of things to do – but all you want to do is take a nap.   Sound familiar?  There is actually a physiological reason for this feeling you are experiencing.  Our strongest need to sleep occurs between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., and between 1 pm and 3 pm.

So what if your schedule is not flexible enough to take a “power nap” everyday?  Here are a few ways to fight off the afternoon slump without reaching for that 3rd cup of coffee or the junk food  in the vending machine:

1.  Eat a Healthy Breakfast:  Turns out “mom” was right on this one  - skipping breakfast will deplete your energy all day…even if you eat a good lunch.

Eggs with sautéed spinach and veggies, steal-cut oatmeal with almonds and berries, or a Party Girl Diet Breakfast Parfait made with fat-free plain Greek yogurt layered with fresh fruit and nuts are all great options.

2.  Hydrate:  Prevent energy draining dehydration by drinking at least 8 – 8oz. glasses of water.  Coconut water is also an excellent hydrator supplying as much potassium as a banana – which helps keep your body’s fluid retention in check.

3.  Take it Outside:  If you can, enjoy a 10 minute walk int the morning, after lunch, etc., to improve blood flow and boost your energy for up to 2 hours.  This is an important part of the Party Girl Diet’s 10-10-3 Plan (10 minutes of  exercise and 10 minute meals – 3 times a day)

 4.  Choose Snacks Wisely:  When you need an afternoon “pick me up” reach for complex carbs or protein snacks like nuts, yogurt, and fruit, and just say no to sugary treats, which will only give you a short-term energy boost.

5.  Rub Away Tension and Stress:  Research shows that up to 80% of fatigue is caused by stress and muscle retention.  Take a few minutes to massage your shoulders and neck when you feel them tensing up.  (Or get someone else to do it…)

6.  Move to Spain:  Okay – perhaps this one’s a bit extreme.  So if relocating to Spain to take advantage of their afternoon siesta ritual is not in the cards for you – try to sneak in a 20 – 30 minute cat nap days that you need to “keep the party going” and your energy up into the evening.  For the best results plan your nap before 4 p.m so it does not interfere with your sleep at night.

Eating a healthy meal or snack every 3 – 4 hours will also go a long way to boost your energy and keep your metabolism burning strong.
